How Malaysians tie the knot!
Malaysian Weddings and how they are celebrated:
A traditional Malay wedding is one of the most diverse,
lavish and cultural traditions in the world. Malay weddings are well known as
they are generally festive, grand and celebratory that is celebrated with their
families and friends. Like all other weddings, ceremonies of a wedding may be
held over several days, but in some cases, recently Malay couples have chosen to
simplify their marriage, opting to have only the solemnisation ceremony also
known as the Nikkah along side with a simple lunch reception celebrated with their
close family and friends. This may be done to decrease costs or to ensure that
the wedding is more aligned to Islamic beliefs.
Those couples who choose to have a grand wedding, have
various activities which can be conveniently divided into two parts. The first
part is known as the ‘Akad Nikkah’ also known as the marriage contract, which
is the legal and religious aspect of the wedding. The second part however is
the 'Bersanding’ or enthronement, which is where both of the couples and their
families celebrate the marriage together.
The Akad Nikkah:
Generally, all Malay weddings, begin with the Akad Nikkah which
is an Islamic ceremony without which no marriage is valid. Consent of both the
bride and groom must be obtained, and the groom signs the marriage contract,
this contract ensures that the marriage is entered into willingly by both the
parties. The Nikkah contract also ensures that the groom agrees to provide the
bride with a Mas Khawin, in Arabic it is called Mahr. Basically the Mahr is
given by the groom to the bride and can be in the form of money or goods or
anything that the bride demands. The Mas Khawin is a religious requirement that
is carried out in all Muslim marriages which is usually accompanied by a prayer.
After the bride and groom sign the contract, a marriage certificate will be
issued by the State Religious Council representatives following the ceremony
and the marriage is then legally recognised.
The Bersanding:
The Bersanding is also considered as the wedding day
according to Malay traditions and customs. The ceremony often begins with the
groom’s procession with friends, relatives, musician and people waving ‘Bung Manggar’
(palm blossoms) as they impatiently wait to meet the bride. The Bersanding can
take place a day after the Nikkah ceremony, but only Malays know how many days
it takes to plan the bersanding ceremony as it is considered the high point of
a Malay wedding. During the Bersanding,
the couple sit on a specialised sofa called the pelamin. Prior to the
bersanding ceremony, guests are entertained in the grooms house in the morning,
and together with the groom make a grand entry at the ceremony who are
accompanied by male musicians (Hadrah or Kompang band), as they make a
procession to meet the bride. To entertain the guests, attempts to stop the
meeting between the groom and bride may be comically staged, to create
excitement and enthusiasm among the guests. According to Malay tradition, as
the couple finally get to see each other, the loved ones and guests sprinkle
the couple with scented water and yellow rice , as a way to give blessing to
the newlywed couple. Towards the end of
the ceremony, the family members of the couple give the guests a ‘Bunga Telur’,
which is a symbol of fertility and it is an ornamented egg festooned with a
flower, as a sign of fertility.
